I actually live in Bassano del Grappa where this mystery takes place so it was an extremely entertaining read. Like the author I spent years in Italy and have now retired to this town so when I discovered an author who writes mysteries set in Italy and one is set actually in the town that I live in I jumped at the chance to read it. What a delightful way to spend an afternoon. The local color and scene are spot on and fun to read. The book is not heavy nor violent. I typically don’t try and guess who did it when I read and I don’t think there were clues in the writing so I was content to just enjoy the ride. The book reads quickly and isn’t overly long nor is the plot convoluted. There is the requisite murder at a symposium about Bassano’s most acclaimed painter, the real artist Jacopo del Ponte, and Rick Montoya, an American interpreter living in Rome happens to be working the conference when he becomes both a suspect as well as amateur sleuth. All in good fun. I definitely like the locations of the books and the author is quite knowledgeable about Italy, speaks the language, so it makes for an interesting read. The mysteries are not great, but OK. The lead character has an interesting bacground, but he's not very...don't know the word. He's likable, but very bland. Seems like this story could've been shorter...too many characters that had to be introduced and woven into the plot. I will probably continue the series as I enjoy the locations and the genuine "Italianess" of the stories...he's no Montalbano, though, for sure.
