Ebook About
With wry humor, deep cultural insight, and an impressive capacity for malt liquor and black pepper potato chips, Ken Seeroi takes you through real-life tales of women in short skirts, men with no teeth, a friend's suicide, a fight with a yakuza, and a maze of smokey back-alley bars throughout Japan. This raucous, first-hand account is unvarnished Japan seen from the inside, detailed in fifty-eight astonishing stories. Inside: What to do after you get arrested; Dating versus having sex in Japan; How to get a job in Japan (and when to walk away); Renting an apartment as a "foreigner"; How to secure a visa, then not get deported; Why Japan's safe, but not that safe; How to survive a massive earthquake; When to use Japanese, and when not to; Why you want a very small Japanese motorcycle; and The one thing you must never do in Japan.

Book Strange Nights, and Some Days Too: Why You’ll Love Japan, for About a Year Review :

So last night I don my PJs, climb into bed, and crack open Ken Seeroi's Strange Nights. This was around 10 pm, and way past my bedtime. Four hours later, I was still wide awake, wondering where that drowsy feeling had gone. The culprit was in my hands: Seeroi's book is too damned interesting. The book wove a weird kind of spell. Ever been mesmerized by wry humor? Me neither. Not til last night. By 11 pm, though, Seeroi's ironic sensibility had taken over my brain. I'd fallen down some kind of rabbit-hole, and couldn't put the book down. This morning, I woke to a world tinged an ironic shade of green. Even my coffee looked ironic. I looked at it and said “You gonna wake me up, pal?” and it shot back: “Yeah, right: you were up until 2 am, remember? That’s on you.”Strange Nights is like Beatnik anthropology. The beatnik sensibility will keep you smiling, and Seeroi's observations will cast a strange light on whatever culture you happen to inhabit. Whether you're Japanese or American, Boomer or Millennial, a straight arrow (like me) or kinda bent (like Seeroi), you'll awaken to the absurdity of modern life. Read this book, and learn not to take it--or anything, really--too seriously. It's only life, after all.If you have any affection for the writings of Jack Kerouac or Hunter S Thompson, you'll love Strange Nights. If you don't, read it anyway: it'll make you smile for at least four hours, and might just cure you of existential dread. “How Japan Made Me Gay” is downright hilarious. Great stuff, but not recommended for insomniacs.
I've been reading Ken Seeroi's blog for a while now and always found it presented an entertaining and ironic look on life. This book is an no-brainer if you're also a fan of the blog.If you haven't read his blog, Ken Seeroi writes about his personal experiences living as a foreigner in Japan. The thing I like most is his brutally honest take on everything. He doesn't pull any punches and presents a pretty realistic view of his situation, both good and bad. I've had somewhat similar experiences living for several years in a different non-English-speaking country, learning the language and getting to know the people, so a lot of the stories resonated with me. Ken's writing style is pretty blunt and sardonic and I enjoyed that a lot too.The book is organized into chapters that are usually somewhere around the 5 page mark (on my Kindle, viewed at whatever zoom level I had it at, but anyway, they're usually a 5-10 minute read). This makes the book well suited to picking up, reading a couple of chapters, and putting down again, although I found it hard to put down and I raced through the chapters in just a few sittings.Overall, the book is an interesting and honest take on the author's experiences, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in life in Japan, life overseas, or just a funny and well-written set of stories in general.
